The 300 kV TEM FEI Tecnai F30 Helium "Polara" is a cryo transmission electron microscope dedicated to visualizing biological samples as close to their native state as possible. It is unique in Austria and equipped with the most advanced imaging systems, was funded by a Vienna Spot of Excellence grant and became fully operational at the beginning of 2008. Since 2015 it is equipped with a new camera (Gatan K2 summit direct electron detector) capable of up to near atomic resolution. Additionally an alternative camera system with an energy filter can be used for elemental analysis of samples by Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy (EELS).
