Short Description
The Applied Biosystems 3130xl Genetic Analyser is a 16-capillary electrophoresis instruments ideal for medium throughput projects. The instrument can be used to provide sequence data or microsatellite genotypes (fragment analysis) from PCR amplified DNA samples. The samples can be run on a 50cm array which gives sequence reads or fragment genotypes up to about 900+basepairs. Microsatellite samples can be multiplexed in pools of markers such that many loci can be genotyped at once using 4 different fluorescent dyes and differing fragment lengths.

Methods & Expertise for Research Infrastructure
The lab routinely conducts estimates of mating systems and parentage in natural and zoo populations. We also investigate the phylogenetic relationships between populations and species from many parts of the world. Our expertise covers a wide spectrum of taxa including, mollusks, amphibians, mammals, fish, insects and bacteria.
