University of Salzburg
Salzburg | Website
Short Description
The aerospace research group of the department has an excellent track record of research in the areas of air traffic simulation and wireless communication network design. University of Salzburg’s sophisticated simulation tools have been used in a great number of national and international projects and helped to evaluate existing systems and design new ones. The research group was able to establish its expertise in range of relevant topics within the field of aero-space research. University of Salzburg has participated through this re-search group in many regional, national, and European projects and is also involved in the “Single European Sky ATM Research” joint undertaking of the European Union.
The Core Facility features many computers and special devices for carrying out complex, large scale simulations in the Aerospace Research and Rail domain.
The "Aviation Competence Center Salzburg (ACCS)" features several appications and working positions, like: Air Traffic Controller working position with radar screen, Arrival-/Departure Manager, Flight Strip Tool; Tower/Remote Tower Simulator and Flight Deck Simulator.

Methods & Expertise for Research Infrastructure
The Research Infratstructure is based on an ATM/ATC/CNS Simulator (Air Traffic Management / Air Traffic Control / Communication, Navigation and Surveillance) which simulates todays and future (up to year 2040) world-wide air traffic (runway-to-runway and gate-to-gate resp.) accurately. Based on the air traffic simulation also the expected data traffic of future applications is generated accurately taking into account the corresponding data exchange between Pilot and Air Traffic Controller or Pilot/Crew and Airline/Airport during each phase of the flight (communications at departure gate, taxiing, takeoff, Standard Instrument Departure (SID) Route, Enroute, STAR/Arrival, Approach, Final Approch, landing, taxiing and communications at the Destination Gate).
This sophisticated simulation environment allows to evaluate todays communications systems (e.g. VDL Mode 2) and future aeronautical communication systems (terrestrical (L-DACS) and satellite communications) and supports design concept and dimensioning of future communication systems. By applying sophisticated simulation techniques, it is possible to simulate 10 thousand or even more than 100 thousand aircraft simultaneously, wheras these aircraft access - quasi simultaneously - around 1 million of operational navigation data. With this sophisticated research infrastructure and simulation environment, the Aerospace Research group of the Computer Sciences Institute of University of Salzburg has established an expertise and know-how basis, which is considered unprecedented and unique in Europe, which is proofen by numerous reserach projects and industrial co-operations in the Aerospace and Rail domain throughout the past decades.
