Short Description
Big SMP (Symmetric MultiProcessor) System with 2016 CPU cores and 15¾ TB of RAM. Use this if you need (tightly coupled) massive parallel processing or huge amounts of RAM for your jobs (→ Capability Computing).
In case of myriads of small computational tasks (→ Throughput Computing, as typically found in Parameter Studies) your jobs will be routed to one of the attached conventional Cluster- and Grid-Computing Facilities of the JKU Linz.

Methods & Expertise for Research Infrastructure
General Purpose HPC System: A large-scale Symmetric Multiprocessor System. Especially useful if your task at hand depends on tightly coupled massive parallel computing or on huge amounts of RAM. The single system image is managed by the high performance operating system Linux/x86_64 (SuSE Linux Enterprise Server).

In the course of 2018, the aging MACH mainframe computer handed over its function as a supra-regionally used performance computer to the "MACH-2 supercomputer" (of the SGI UV3000 type). In order to serve the ever growing demand for capability computing facilities the good old UV1000 still is doing production in the central compute server pool of the Johannes Kepler University of Linz.
