Short Description
VSC-5 is a high-performance computer. It is a cluster consisting of 828 individual computers. The individual computers (nodes) are connected to each other and to a file system via a high-performance network. Each node has 2 AMD processors (64 cores each) and 512 to 2048 GB main memory. 62 nodes are additionally equipped with 2 graphics processors (GPUs) NVIDIA A100 each. The system is essentially operated in batch mode, but also has interactive access.
The system is equipped with an extensive software package which, in addition to a number of application programs, contains the necessary tools for the development and optimization of parallel programs. Access is possible for users from all areas of research. An extensive course program and a hotline via e-mail are offered to support users.

Methods & Expertise for Research Infrastructure
VSC-5 is available to all employees of the participating universities who need an efficient infrastructure for high-performance computing. In addition to the classic applications from (theoretical) physics and chemistry, meteorology, life sciences (bioinformatics), computationally intensive applications and simulations are increasingly used in almost all research areas. The VSC team (organizational unit VSC Research Center E057-09) operates the system and supports the users. An extensive course program and a hotline via e-mail are offered to support users.
