Das Gerät wird zur hochempfindlichen Detektion und Identifizierung von Biomolekülen anhand der akkuraten Masse oder anhand von Fragmentierungsspektren verwendet. Mit Hilfe solcher Messungen können z. B. Expressionsprofile von Proteinen oder Abbauprodukte von Medikamenten analysiert werden.
