Short Description
The equipment pool of the core facility includes a device to measure brain activity and structure (major device magnetic resonance imaging MRI), a device to measure the magnetic activity of the brain (magnetoencephalography MEG), devices to measure brain waves (electroencephalography EEG, 1x 256-channel hdEEG, 1x stationary 64-channel system, 4x 32-channel systems, as well as 7 ambulatory EEG systems), biofeedback/neurofeedback (BFT/NFT) devices to train autonomic body functions and brain waves (3 stationary NFTs, 3 ambulatory BFT/NFTs), as well as devices to record eye movements (eye movement cameras) and devices for hormone determination from biological samples. In addition to these major devices, the EEG-cluster comes with network- and hardware-dongle licenses for EEG analyses.
The “lab for sleep, cognition and consciousness research” additionally operates sensors for multi-channel recording (polysomnography), as well as actigraphs to evaluate sleep-wake rhythms and 2 infrared cameras. Furthermore, the EEG cluster is equipped with a new hdEEG system with 256 channels as well as a corresponding physio-box for external physiological sensors required for sleep- and long term recordings. The system is equipped with EEG caps for short- and long-term recordings and additionally allows recordings with newborns.
The equipment pool enables scientific research on questions regarding cognitive neuroscience. The eye movement cameras allow assessment of the position of the gaze of participants with a very high temporal and spatial resolution (2000 Hz sampling rate; < 0.5° accuracy). The EEG allows assessment of human brain waves with a very high temporal resolution (1000 Hz sampling rate). The MEG allows measurements of magnetic brain activity with high temporal and spatial resolution. The MRI allows the spatial localization of neural correlates of cognitive processes. The co-registration of eye movements and brain activity (EEG, MEG and fMRI) allows research with a high ecological validity. Linking hormone and brain data allows a deeper understanding of inter- and intra-individual differences in neuronal information processing.

Methods & Expertise for Research Infrastructure
The techniques of MRI, EEG, MEG and eye movement recordings enable research of “mind and brain“ at the interface of cognitive science and neurology. The integration of cognitive science and neuroscience (cognitive neuroscience) promises a better understanding of mental and verbal competences, as well as a substantiated understanding of cognitive disorders. Besides basic research in specific fields (memory, mentalizing, language, number processing) the devices are required for research on specific disorders like learning disorders in children, cognitive disorders in neurological patients and their rehabilitation, dementia in old age, language development in children with a cochlea implant. With the focus on specific disorders, students are provided with a broad research-related perspective on application in different practical fields like neuropsychology, developmental and pedagogical psychology and developmental neuropsychology.
The work group “Oscillations, Brain and Thinking“ in addition to the (i) EEG-Lab for brain oscillations, operates a (ii) Lab for sleep and consciousness research (http://www.sleepscience.at) as well as a (iii) physiological sport lab. The EEG-Lab works on the complex oscillatory EEG correlates of attention and memory processes. The “Lab for sleep and consciousness research” dedicates its work to the interplay between sleep, dreams and memory processing during sleep as well as research on residual cognitive skills and consciousness in patients in vegetative state using EEG and sleep-polysomnography. Moreover, Baby-EEG is measured and assessed to which extent prenatal learning is detectable in newborns. The sport lab engages in physiological correlates with respect to preparation and execution of movement (e.g. darts or shooting sport with EEG). Neurofeedback is applied by all 3 labs for modification and enhancement of performance (e.g. sleep quality).
