Short Description
The UHPLC-ESMS system is a combination of an ultrahigh performance chromatography system with UV-detector and a high-resolution electrospray time-of-flight mass spectrometer (ESMS). The HPLC system is suitable for use with most separation columns routinely used for separation of organic molecules. The ESMS can detect compounds which are ionisable using electrospray ionisation as both positive and/or negative ions. The ions can be fragmented using collision induced dissociation (CID). The fragments together with the molecular ion can be used for structure elucidation of compounds.
The system has an average mass resolution of more than 30.000, excellent isotopic fidelity, high mass accuracy and a wide dynamic range. This allows for assigning of the elemental composition of detected molecules. At the same time the system is suitable to detect molecules with a molecular weight above 3000 g/mol. It comes with a suit of software allowing semi-automatic identification and quantification of separated compounds.

Methods & Expertise for Research Infrastructure
We are predominantly interested in biomolecules containing hetero-atoms like arsenic, selenium and sulphur. We have extensive experience in the on-line combination of HPCL-ESMS and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The combination of these detectors allows the untargeted search for new compounds containing these elements in crude biological extracts even at low concentrations.
